There is a need to flood proof sewer lift stations by installing bypass pumps and other equipment to enhance reliability.
The City of Denham Springs provides three utilities (Water, Wastewater and Natural Gas). When any of these utilities are disrupted, residents face challenges in remaining in their homes. During the 2016 floods, over 80 sewer lift stations were damaged. The water system managed to remain on line due to the heroic efforts of City employees who refueled backup generators from boats. This was identified as a high priority at two prior community meetings. Progress has been made on temporary repairs and the City is working with FEMA on permanent repairs and mitigation.
This project has two components:
- Upgrade sewer lift stations
- Replace damaged gas meters.
The desired outcome of this project is community members having reliable utilities during flood conditions. This project impacts the ability of all community residents to remain in their homes and directly addresses the community vision statement.
This project also supports:
- Resilience from future disaster events
- Hazard Mitigation
- Housing
Possible Funding Sources, Technical Assistance, and Partners:
- Hazard Mitigation (Livingston Parish)
